Happy Monday: Inspirational Quote for the Week
“Goals are a means to an end, not the ultimate purpose of our lives. They are a tool to concentrate our focus and move us in a direction. The only reason we really pursue goals is to cause ourselves to expand and grow. Achieving goals by themselves will never make us happy in the long term; it’s who you become, as you overcome the obstacles necessary to achieve your goals, that can give you the deepest and most long-lasting sense of fulfillment.”
I really like this quote by Tony Robbins. It allows me to look at goal setting with a different view. The New Year is when people really focus on goal setting and set New Year’s Resolutions. However, some people don’t even want to make resolutions because they’re afraid they’ll break them and be disappointed in themselves.
We all have good intentions of setting and achieving goals at the beginning of each new year. So what happens along the way that causes us to fall off the wagon? It can be several factors: sometimes the novelty wears off, sometimes we’re over-zealous in setting our goals and set them too high, and sometimes we act like it’s our sole purpose in life to get things on our to do list checked off. It feels good to check things off!
However, when we focus so much on just getting things checked off, we forget to enjoy the journey along the way or the reason why we set a particular goal in the first place. While forward movement is great, we also need to attend to our life balance and enjoying the process of achieving our goals, not just the results.
Enjoying the process of working towards a goal, and celebrating your successes along the way makes achieving a goal more fulfilling. Otherwise, your goals can feel like empty accomplishments.
Enjoy the ride and have a great week!
