Tips for Your Adult Child’s Career Search

Whether your adult child is new to the job market or eager to make a change in their current career, they must understand that the search is a process. Help them along this career search process by encouraging your adult son or daughter to:
- Learn more about what it is they want to do by:
- Visiting the bookstore, library or online outlets for books and resources.
- Meeting with someone that does what they hope to do, and then get all the details on how that person got started, what it takes to get a foot in the door, how they spend their days, and how they reached success.
- Researching and enrolling in local classes or seminars to learn more.
- Immerse themselves in an industry by:
- Volunteering in an area of interest to gain experience.
- Taking a sabbatical or hiatus from their current job to try something new. Encourage your young adult to ask their current employer if the opportunity exists for extended leave, and then try out a new profession during that time. Sit down with them to look at resources like Vocation Vacations online to see if and how they can test-drive their dream job.
Encourage your adult child to jump in and get started on this process. Sometimes just the idea of a job search can stall your young adult’s progress before they even get going. But the sooner they make that entry into the job search process, the sooner they will find a rewarding position that puts them on the path towards their ideal career.
