Tips for Your Young Adult’s Job Hunt During a Recession

It is no secret that a recession is not the best time for job hunters to be pounding the pavement. If your young adult is looking for a job in a trying economic environment, encourage them to stay focused, maintain a positive attitude and be persistent. A job search begun with fear and dread will not go well, so remind your child that they will find the right job eventually, regardless of the current economic situation.
Along with your ongoing parental encouragement, offer these tips for job hunting in a recession:
- Let your son or daughter know that it is completely acceptable to take on a “temporary” job while looking for another one. While your son or daughter may not find the ideal job situation right off the bat, finding any job may be better than no job at all. Remind them, that any job situation is going to add experience to their resume, give them confidence, and widen their web for networking.
- Talk with your adult child about their limits. In a recession, companies may offer less compensation or benefits for a position than they typically would offer, so make sure your child knows what their minimum requirements are, and what would constitute a deal breaker. Encourage them to ask for more than they require in the beginning so there is room for negotiation if needed.
- Encourage your adult son or daughter to start networking – to reach out to their contacts, and yours if appropriate. This is the time to use your network, call in all favors and follow up with all leads, near and far. Rehearse their ‘pitch’ with them, so they are comfortable in their efforts.
If you maintain a positive attitude, that feeling will be reflected by your young adult through his or her job search and well into their chosen career path.
