Tips to Get Your Boomeranger Back on the Business Track

by Hallie Crawford, MA, CPCC

An increase in the number of ‘boomerangers’ – or young adults who return home after college or in between jobs – are leaving parents wondering… why has my empty nest become so crowded?

There’s a way to de-clutter that nest and make this a temporary arrangement. Find a way to help your adult son or daughter find a career, not just a job.

To help your adult child get back on the business track, remember these 3 tips:

  1. Know that college doesn’t have all the answers. Most colleges prepare young adults for lifelong learning – as well as some tasks related to an industry, but few teach them how to write a resume correctly or even how to search for a career doing the tasks they love to do. As a parent, you have to help them find their way – or identify an expert who can.

  2. Plug into the network. Teaching your children how to network is vitally important to getting a job. Help them by reaching out to your own social and business network. Arrange meetings for your son or daughter with your contacts.

  3. Let them know unemployment is not an option. Your young adult should pay for their own transportation, cell phone and entertainment, even if that means slinging burgers while they look for their dream job. After all, the best therapy for anybody is a job; it keeps them connected to reality. Additionally, any experience can be used to help find the next step in the career ladder.
