Where you uncover your passion and find your direction

My mission is to change the way people feel about work, from just a paycheck to a fulfilling endeavor that is an extension of their purpose and passion.

Fall is here! It's the season for giving thanks.

In this issue

Note and Inspirational Quote: Take the time

I love the sound of leaves crackling beneath my feet. Fall is here and with it Thanksgiving, when we give thanks for everything we have in our lives and the great things that have happened so far this year.

I find that for many of us when we accomplish something we typically take just the briefest moment to relish in it before quickly moving on to the next thing. While I believe forward movement and growth is important (it is one of my values), I also like to remind myself and my clients to consider where they’ve been, what they’ve accomplished and really celebrate what they’ve achieved so far this year. My "Food for Thought" article below with the inspirational quote for this month relates to this idea. What about you – do you take the time to truly savor your success? As you’re giving thanks this holiday season, I suggest you resist the temptation to rush through your “Holiday To Do List” and be sure to take some time to really celebrate what you have accomplished this year and the good things that are going on in your life.

Remember…what you focus your attention on expands. Stay tuned for more on this idea in my December ezine.

Food for Thought – The Pitfalls of List Consciousness

This resonated big-time for me the other day. I realized I'd been caught up in my To Do list for several days, only focusing on getting things checked off the list. (Yes, I'm guilty too!) Then I read this quote in an Oprah magazine article and it hit me as so true and accurate. It’s an excerpt from a book called Finding the Deep River Within by Abby Seixas.

"List consciousness is a state of mind that is entirely future-oriented. With a subtle but constant quality of rushing, it operates on the premise that life will happen once everything is crossed off The List…When you are in list consciousness, you are leaning into the future and completely missing the present.”

This month as part of giving thanks, when you find yourself dwelling on, or stressing about, future tasks and projects, consciously bring your focus back to the present, breathe and enjoy the moment.

Career Corner – Tips for choosing a more fulfilling career path

Choosing a career path that’s right for you is a process. Here’s a tip that can help you get started.

Last month I talked about taking action and just getting started towards finding that ideal career path. (To read that article: “The secret to finding the right job is this: take the first step” click here.) Perhaps you are now wondering what types of steps you might take to get started. Depending on your personal goals and dreams, there are many possibilities. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing…

Learn more about what you might want to do:

  • Visit the library, bookstore or Amazon.com for books and resources.

  • Find someone who does what you think you might want to do and ask them to tell you about it: the preparation they needed to get a foot in the door, how they spend their days, and how they have achieved success. People are often generous with their time when asked to share their experience.

  • Research and sign up for local classes to learn more.

Dive in:

  • Look for volunteer opportunities that will give you some experience in an area of interest. There’s no better way to find out what it’s really like.

  • If you’re currently working, consider taking a sabbatical or hiatus from work to try something new. Talk to your supervisor about taking a short leave of absence. You’ll never know if they’ll say yes if you don’t ask! If approved, use the time to try out a possible new profession. A company called Vocation Vacations offers cool ways to test drive dream jobs. To read more about this idea in my recent blog entry click here.

Remember it’s more important to just get started than to develop the perfectly-planned course of action. If you wait for things to be perfect you could be waiting a very long time! This excerpt from a Body and Soul magazine illustrates this point: “Most people labor over their journal entries trying to find where they’ll be the most successful. This is a complete waste of time. Perfection doesn’t exist when it comes to passion. Just choose one thing that gets your juices flowing and act on it, whether you think you’ll be good at it or not. The idea is to get started so you can see where this next phase leads you.”

Go for it, get started today! A great place to start is by listening to my “Love Your Job! Finding a Career that FITS” teleclass audio recording for only $12.99. Click here for more info.

Learn from a Client Success Story — Katie Johnson

Katie has been working with me for about two years on life and career goals. Twice in our last few coaching sessions she has exclaimed, "I don't understand how other people live without a life coach! Thanks Katie. I love getting positive feedback like this from my clients :) It makes my work even more rewarding than it already is! Here's her story:

How have you benefited from coaching?
Career: In these past two years, I have worked through some pretty tough issues in a job I wasn't happy in and I am now doing something I love and getting paid what I'm worth. I'm utilizing my talents and I feel good about what I do. I would never have dreamed up this job, but with Hallie's help I was able to visualize what I wanted in a career and make it happen.

Work/Life Balance and Fulfillment: While I do love my job, I also love my social life and spending time alone. Through working with Hallie as my coach, I am now able to leave work at a reasonable hour and not feel guilty about it, so that I can maintain work/life balance. I also have been much more intentional about ensuring all of my values are being met in some way every week so that I am fulfilled in my career and in my personal life. For a long time I would just come home from work and watch TV. I didn't take the initiative to connect with friends or acquaintances on a consistent basis. Now that I know being social is part of who I am and is one of my values, I make sure to invite friends over for dinner, take a group fitness class or participate in some other social activity so I feel balanced and fulfilled.

Change Perspective: Finally, I have learned how to change my perspective in order to better handle difficult situations or obstacles. When something is really bothering me, and I know I have to live with it, sometimes I just need to look at it a different way. Hallie helps me change my perspective so that I can either be at peace with the things I cannot change or I can turn them into an advantage or challenge to overcome.

In my coaching sessions I am pushed to think creatively and positively, and through this thinking I am changing how I live my life. I know who I am, what is important to me and how I can be most effective and successful in my life. Through working with Hallie I am more confident and self-assured. I have learned how to overcome obstacles and be the person I want to be.

Here’s what we learned from Katie:

  • Identify and honor your values.

  • Visualize what you want in a career. (This is a good first step.)

  • Develop balance in your life and career, in a way that works for you.

  • Look at your perspective on a situation that's either bothering you or where you're not moving forward, does your perspective need some adjusting?

Online Career Test: Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential -- MAPP
http://www.assessment.com

I took this test and found it helpful. (I mentioned it in my last month’s ezine in the Career Corner article). For free, you get a portion of your results along with a partial list of possible careers for you. This alone may not lead you to find your ideal career path, but it is definitely a good first step.

With career testing tools like this, I recommend that you use the test results in conjunction with a coaching session or two. This is because each test measures specific things about you - like your skills, motivations, or work style for example. What they don’t typically do is provide a complete, comprehensive picture of all of the components you need to consider in determining and defining the ideal career for you. To get that big picture perspective, you really need to have a coaching session with a certified career coach who can help you identify what to look for in defining your ideal career path. Another way to learn more about what you should consider as you evaluate potential jobs and careers is to listen to my “Love Your Job! Finding a Career that FITS” Teleclass.
