Food for Thought – Making strong decisions
When I work with clients, I encourage them to make decisions from a position of strength. We often act out of feelings related to fear, weakness or some other negative emotion/energy.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been noticing how I approach my own decisions. When I feel confident and strong, the outcome is always better. My actions are more powerful as a result. You know the difference. When have you made a decision or taken action out of fear or anger? What was the outcome? Probably not so great.
This takes practice so start small to try it out. Think of an upcoming decision you have to make. How are you feeling about it? If you are experiencing ‘bad vibes’, try to shift your mindset or, if possible, wait until you feel better or more confident to make that important decision.
Career Corner – Tips for choosing a more fulfilling career path
Choosing a career path that’s right for you is a process that takes time. Here’s a tip that can help you get started.
Don’t wait
I recently read a quote by inspirational speaker Tony Robbins: “ Most of us do not change until we experience deep pain.” Sound familiar? It’s like going to the dentist - few people like to go so they wait until they’re in pain before they take action.
Don’t wait unti you’re in pain to make the changes you need or want to make in your career or your life. If you are unsatisfied with something at work, do something about it: proactively look for opportunities to make desired changes to your responsibilities or work environment, or make a plan to change jobs or career paths if you need to. Don’t wait until you are so frustrated that you end up taking a drastic action out of desperation. Take charge of your destiny with concrete steps to change what you don’t like and create what you want. Start today!

Letter from a Client – A Success Story
I occasionally ask my clients if they would be willing to provide a reference to other prospective career seekers regarding my services. The following excerpt from one such reference reinforces my belief that with commitment, a plan, and a little faith, we can make our career dreams come true!
I can certainly relate to having a dream that just won't go away, yet having anxiety about when and how to move forward. I had an "if not now, when?" realization last fall re: my dream to pursue a freelance writing career. I was just very unfulfilled in my corporate career and had been thinking about a change, reading about a change, everything except "doing it". I learned about Hallie through an e-mail and decided to contact her.
Hallie made me feel at ease and I decided to join her Career Seekers Teleclass last fall. What really impressed me was her approach. Rather than to start off with a discussion of skills and a battery of tests to match my skills with a list of potential careers (as has been my experience with other career coaches), she starts off with more of a "Who are you as a person" approach - - looking at values, priorities, talents, interests, desirable work environments, etc. Her exercises really push you to be introspective and think about your whole self, not just who you are from 9-5. That clicked for me. She also spends a lot of time coaching on how to deal with discouraging thoughts, either from your own inner voice telling you that "this will never work, you can't support yourself with this, etc." or from comments from others that may stall your progress. I had plenty of the former, which made me not move forward sooner.
Through the coaching, I realized that I was not ready to quit my day job altogether, but that I was indeed ready to move forward and make a change sooner rather than later. With Hallie's suggestions and my own brainstorming I came up with an alternative solution of part-time employment (to ensure a regular paycheck) which has given me a flexible schedule to pursue the writing opportunities I've thought about for so long. My progress over the past several months has been very rewarding - - I'm getting paying work, I'm feeling a sense of accomplishment, and I'm enjoying it! I continue to work with Hallie one-on-one for reinforcement as well as a sounding board. She has a way of using probing questions and exercises to help me come up with ideas, and she also generously shares her personal experiences re: the evolution of her own business when there is an overlap with what I may be thinking or experiencing.
I cannot recommend her highly enough. As I said, I've worked with other coaches and her model of focusing on the whole person, not just the "careerist", is what sold me. I hope you decide to work with her and, even more importantly, I hope you will go for your dream!
